English version

Leonardo Paez became marathon world champion for the second consecutive time last October in Turkey. The 38-year-old Colombian gave us an exclusive interview at the start of the new season.

How was your preparation?
Leonardo: My preparation started in November here in Italy, and then it continued in Colombia where i’ve been for two months doing gym and training with my bike. At the moment i’m still preparing for the season but i think that my training is doing well and i’m feeling good even though i had a bad crush a week ago and i’m still recovering.

Did corona interfere with your preparation?
Leonardo : Luckily the Coronavirus didn’t interfere a lot on my preparation, but i was used to do a few races during my stay in Colombia, but this year due to Corona i only did one race. By the way that’s not a big deal, i had the opportunity to train well, and i’m happy like this.

What are your goals this season?
Leonardo: My principal goal is to do well during all the season, i want to give my best during all the competitions. But in particular i would like to do well in the HERO SUDTIROL DOLOMITES, in the DOLOMITI SUPERBIKE and obviously i want to do well at the World Championship in Isola d’elba.

What do you like and appreciate about the marathon?
Leonardo : I like Marathon because i like long distance races and because comparing to Cross Country it’s less artificial, means that the course is more natural, it’s almost like you’re always on adventure.

Isn’t marathon underrated?
Leonardo : Yes, i think Marathon is really underrated and i think it’s a shame because it’s a beautiful discipline like all the others. Honestly i don’t know why it is like that, also because there’s a lot of people practicing marathon. For example every year the Dolomiti Super Bike counts more than 4.000 members.

Which world title was the best?

Leonardo : You never get used to win a World Title, it is always a feeling you can’t describe with simple words, but if I have to choose, I would probably say that the best title was the first I won, because I fought for so long to win that title and the day I finally did I really felt so happy I couldn’t even breathe.

What does mountainbiking mean in Colombia?
Leonardo: In Colombia a lot of people practice Mountain Bike and especially nowadays is becoming a really important sport. However a lot of athletes, especially young athletes, they need to go away from Colombia to go competing in Europe because in Colombia they can’t find a good team that can help them.
