Gaia Tormena is intussen drie keer wereldkampioene Eliminator geworden.

Gaia Tormena wants to score in Eliminator and Shorttrack

Gaia Tormena has since become a three-time World Eliminator champion. We met the affable Italian the day after her World Cup race in Nove Mesto Na Morave at the coach of her sponsor, Vittoria. We had a nice chat with her.

Gaia, the Eliminator is clearly the discipline best mastered in mountain biking?

  • Yes, it suits me best at the moment. For a long time I have had super fast starts in my legs and technical skills. It also gives me the best results like now with World Cups and World Championships.

Will you be riding all the World Cups this season, including the World Championships?

  • I am already riding the World Cup races and the World Championships in Indonesia.

Here in Nove Mesto, the World Cup racen you was riding cross-country. What do you think about that?

  • Here you can find the most beautiful courses in the whole World Cup circuit. As a child, I already dreamed of that. Last year when I came here for the first time, I was super excited. Especially because I could also ride the shorttrack at the U23. This fits best with what I do with the Eliminator. It’s one of my main goals this year. It’s longer than the Eliminator, but shorter than cross-country. I finished 22nd, which was not the result I had hoped for. But this is a start and I want to work on getting even better to get a better position as well. In the XCO I started well, because I can do that well through the Eliminator. I started in the leading group and then lost places. In the end, I finished 69th. That’s not an immediately good result. But I remember the good things from the race. I am happy with what I did. I was focused riding and that gives me pleasure. I was also good in the downhill and that makes me feel good.

Do you now also have ambitions to become world shorttrack champion?

  • Maybe(laughs). It’s too early to say anything about that. But in the future I definitely want to go for it and it will be one of my main goals together the Eliminator.

What does mountain biking represent in Italy?

Cycling in general is popular. Road cycling is more popular than mountain biking. But the Italian federation is doing a good job to make the sport attractive. I hope mountain biking in the future. And I try to help promote that with my results in the Eliminator.

There is also a World Cup race at home, in Val di Sole. Obviously you want to score there in front of your own people?

  • Yes, I will be there. As I said, it will be for shorttrack. I love the shorttrack in Val di Sole. I don’t know if it will be the same as previous years, but anyway I want to train for that. Do my best for a good result because there will be all Italian fans there. Everyone will want to be good there and so will I.

Gaia, we wish you continued success this season and in the coming years.

Gaia Tormena vuole fare centro in Eliminator e Shorttrack
